Why "Made in the USA?"
Many industry experts have asked us -
"Why do you make this in the USA? Metal work like this is much cheaper
in Mexico or China"
We agree. We could save money
by getting the parts made overseas or in Mexico (which is only 60 miles
away), but we chose to keep production in Tucson and employ local people
to make it. We could commission some factory in China to make everything
for us, but then we would lose quality control on the steel and suffer
from huge lead times on shipments. While the choice to make our products here in Tucson will ultimately cost us some profit, we
feel that it is worth it in the long run. There are many benefits that are
not counted directly on the bottom line, such as:
- Better quality control - we can keep a
much closer eye on production if we do it here, instead of overseas.
- Faster product development times
- Keeps the money in the local economy
- It makes us feel good
So while some MBAs would call us foolish,
we are happy with our choice. We care about the people involved in our
product, not just the bottom line on a balance sheet. Customer service
starts at home, with our own employees and spreads outwards to all the

PS - Two years after writing this, I
feel stronger than ever about keeping production here in the USA. It is
the ONLY path to superior quality and satisfied customers, and I am happy
that we made this choice when we started.
